Highland Biodiversity Partnership

The Highland Biodiversity Partnership comprises around 30 representatives of local groups and key organisations committed to understanding, safeguarding, restoring and celebrating biodiversity within the Highland Council area. Its purpose is to provide guidance and support to the existing network of local biodiversity groups, and to make progress on the key strategic biodiversity issues in the Highlands. The Partnership has three sub groups:

  • Management Sub Group (MSG), chaired by George Hamilton of Highland Council, which was set up to identify and make progress on the key strategic issues facing Highland biodiversity by prioritising resources, submitting funding bids and overseeing contracts.
  • Scientific & Technical Advisory Group (STAG), chaired by Jonathan Willet of Highland Council, which aims to provide advice to the Partnership and the local biodiversity groups on issues relating to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and Scottish Biodiversity List habitats and species, and any other issues requiring a scientific or technical input.
  • Invasive Species Forum (ISF), chaired by Cllr Ian Ross, which was set up to identify priorities and oversee action to tackle invasive non-native species in Highland. Reports on progress by the Invasive Species Forum and its Sub Group can be viewed by clicking on the invasive species tab to the left of your screen.

The Partnership updated its Highland Biodiversity Action Plan in 2010. The Plan lists the key strategic biodiversity issues for the Highland Council area, and proposes a range of future actions or projects that Members would like to undertake by 2012. Progress has been made on nine of the ten strategic issues that were identified in the 2006 Highland BAP. The 2010 Plan proposes 24 new projects, each with simple, measurable targets and an identifiable lead partner.
