Highland Biodiversity Partnership

The Highland Biodiversity Partnership comprises around 30 representatives of local groups and key organisations committed to understanding, safeguarding, restoring and celebrating biodiversity within the Highland Council area. Its purpose is to provide guidance and support to the existing network of local biodiversity groups, and to make progress on the key strategic biodiversity issues in the Highlands. The Partnership has two sub groups:

  • Management Sub Group (MSG), chaired by George Hamilton of Highland Council, which was set up to identify and make progress on the key strategic issues facing Highland biodiversity by prioritising resources, submitting funding bids and overseeing contracts.
  • Scientific & Technical Advisory Group (STAG), chaired by Jonathan Willet of Highland Council, which aims to provide advice to the Partnership and the local biodiversity groups on issues relating to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and Scottish Biodiversity List habitats and species, and any other issues requiring a scientific or technical input.

Highland Biodiversity Action Plan

A Review of the seven Highland Local Biodiversity Action Plans was undertaken by ‘Envirocentre’ consultants in 2006. This process produced the first Highland Biodiversity Action Plan, which provided a work plan for the Highland Biodiversity Partnership. It is now three years since this Plan was launched. The members of the Highland Biodiversity Partnership think this is a good time to take stock of progress to date, and look again at the issues to reprioritise work for the next three years.

The Plan was discussed (albeit briefly) at the 2009 Highland Biodiversity Forum in March, and Forum members were given the opportunity to comment on priorities for future work in a subsequent short written consultation exercise. The comments and suggestions have been gathered together as the new draft Highland Biodiversity Action Plan.

We very much welcome your comments on this draft Action Plan, and would be grateful if you could use the response sheet provided at the back to tell us what you think. The closing date for comments is 31 October 2009. The draft Action Plan can be downloaded via the link below:
